Help I Need a Job! What Are the Chances?

The job market is definitely better after nearly six years of being very bad.

You notice I said “better” – but try telling that to someone who hasn’t found employment yet.

It is still a tough job market, so it’s very important that you do whatever you can to stand out from other candidates.

The one most important thing you can do to increase your chances of a great job is to have a marketing perspective in your job search.

A marketing perspective is a mindset, a way of thinking, and it should influence every decision you make during your job search.

What do I mean by a marketing perspective?

View every element of your job search from the prospective employer’s perspective, in much the same way that Steve Jobs created every Apple product to meet the dreams and desires of his customers.

Help Finding Jobs: Some Words of Advice

Begin by reading the job opening carefully. Be very clear about the priority of qualifications, skills and experience asked for. By priority I mean, pay particular attention to the top three in every list – with the first bullet being the most important qualification in the employer’s mind. Do you have this qualification?

Even if you only have one of the top three – lead with that qualification in your cover letter and your resume. That will get you attention.

  • As I’ve said in previous posts, your cover letter should be short, not repeat what’s in your attached resume, but should highlight the most important qualifications/skills, etc. you have that are listed in the job opening.
  • For your resume, rewrite it so the specific qualifications and skills you have that meet this employer’s needs are front and center. Doing this will vastly increase your chances for a job interview.
  • While preparing for your job interview (and of course during your interview), always focus on “how can I solve this employer’s problem with my experience and skills.” 

If you maintain this marketing mindset, it will be easy for you to see what you need to say, what to do, and what to write when applying for a job.

Your chances of landing a job are greatly improved because you are showing how you can help the employer, including examples of how your background can immediately benefit the employer…that you can “hit the ground running.”

I know you want a job, but sadly the employer really doesn’t care about that. That’s true for everyone.

Know What the Employer Needs

The employer has a problem – that’s why there is a job opening.

If you can explain clearly and professionally how you can help move her company forward, you are likely to be the candidate chosen for the position. Try it!blackboard
